Unite the World with Africa Foundation
Paraphrased Mission: Unite Africa’s vision is to unite people with service to provide everyone with health, hope, opportunity, and dignity. Specifically, they focus on giving opportunities to impoverished women and youth in Tanzania by creating quality education, leadership, and business development programs. The Unite Africa Foundation is currently running two projects: The Brave Widow and the Unite Scholars program. These two programs are directly impacting Tanzanian youth and women, providing them with resources and help.
The OCTW Connection: I think that giving marginalized people, especially children and women, the opportunity to receive a quality education is very important. I love the mission of this foundation to specifically tackle this issue in Tanzania and think that they are making a huge impact on many individuals.
Facts and Figures about the issue: Most people in Tanzania live in extreme poverty on less than $1.25 per day, making it one of the poorest countries in the world. More than half of the 50 million Tanzanians are under the age of 14. Unfortunately, only 1.9% of the youth in Tanzania are in secondary school, and an even smaller fraction are girls. Even more distressing, less than 1% of these students attend university.
Regional Context: Tanzania is a country located in East Africa. Tanzania is home to more than 120 various indigenous groups, settled throughout the country. The official languages of Tanzania are Swahili (composite of Bantu and Arabic dialects) and English.
